How doula’s help us mother

“My doula helped me during labor when I was in pain. She kept me focused on breathing and she rubbed my back during contractions”. These are the comments from one of our recent BirthWell Partners doula clients.
Doulas provide support during labor and birth, and research has shown they significantly reduce your chance of having a c-section and help you meet your birthing goals.

But Doulas ALSO help us mother!!!

Having a doula is associated with stronger mother/infant bonding and increased breastfeeding (Zhang, J., Bernasko, J. W., Fahs, M., & Hatch, M. C. (1996). Continuous labor support from labor attendant for primiparous women: A meta-analysis. Obstetrics & Gynecology, 88(4 (part 2)), 739-744.)

Having a doula is associated with higher self esteem scores and lower postpartum depression scores at 6 weeks postpartum (Wolman, W., Chalmers, B., Hofmeyr, J., Nikodem, V.C., (1993). Postpartum Depression and companionship in the clinical birth environment: A randomized, controlled study. American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 168: 1388-93)

Mothers who’ve had a doula at their birth are more likely to report that they picked up their baby every time s/he cried and that sensed their baby’s needs well. And also that they had a higher sense of self worth. (Campbell, D., Lake, M.F., Falk, M., Backstrand, J.R., (2006). A Randomized Control Trial of Continuous Support in Labor by a Lay Doula. JOGNN Vol. 35 #4)

Mothers supported by a BirthWell Partners doula at their birth are 10 times more likely to breastfeed their baby, compared to similar mothers in Jefferson County AL (see graph here). Similarly, having a doula was found to be associated with increased breastfeeding in this study: Zhang, J., Bernasko, J. W., Fahs, M., & Hatch, M. C. (1996). Continuous labor support from labor attendant for primiparous women: A meta-analysis. Obstetrics & Gynecology, 88(4 (part 2)), 739-744.
