Covid-19 update: we are keeping a close eye on the trends in new cases in Alabama and in our county (Jefferson County). The June workshop is currently scheduled as an in-person/virtual hybrid. We will continue to follow recommendations of county health professionals and epidemiologists for Jefferson County. For this reason, plans are subject to change.

Covid-19 schedule for June Birth Doula workshop:
Day 1: Wednesday June 17th (group A) OR Thursday June 18th (group B. The class will be divided into two groups to keep the group size below 10) in-person training 8:30am – 12:30 pm
Day 2, 3 and 4: Friday-Sunday June 19-21 virtual zoom training 9am – 4pm including a one hour lunch break.
Day 5: Monday June 22nd (group B) OR Tuesday June 23rd (group A. The class will be divided into two groups to keep the group size below 10) in-person training 10am – 3pm (including a one hour lunch break: bring your own lunch).
Virtual closing gathering: June 23rd at 6pm
Group A will meet on June 17th and 23rd in person
Group B will meet on June 18th and 22nd in person
This training will meet all requirements for DONA Intro to Childbirth AND Birth Doula Workshop. If we have to shift to ALL virtual, then there will be an added 4-hour in-person requirement that we will offer in the future. In-person sections will be in a large indoor space, wearing masks is required, hand washing will be frequent. Participants will be responsible NOT to attend if they have any (even very mild) symptoms or have been exposed to someone with Covid-19!
The Breastfeeding class will be virtual as scheduled: June 24th, 8:30-12:30. The Perinatal Health Advocate Training will be virtual on June 25th from 9am-12 noon.

This class is not required for DONA certification. However, it is a great opportunity to broaden your understanding of maternal and infant health disparities in our communities, and to learn how a doula can help address these problems. This class IS required for all BirthWell Partners volunteer doulas.

BirthWell also holds a Doula Orientation associated with every training. The orientation and the Perinatal Health Advocate Training are requirements for all Doulas and Doula trainees wishing to doula with our organization; attending births with low resource clients.

About the Birth Doula Workshop:

This course is for anyone interested in supporting families during pregnancy, the birth experience and the first hours and weeks after their baby is born. It is designed to help participants become expert labor support providers. We use hands-on instruction supported by texts and supplementary literature, DVDs, and practical skills. You won’t be sitting around during this workshop! Activities and discussions are designed to prepare you to attend births with confidence!
Attendance constitutes one step in the process of becoming a DONA Int’l.-certified Doula
On completion of the intensive 28-hour workshop, participants will be able to:
-Identify the significance of birth to a family.
-Define the role of the doula, and the doula’s scope of practice.
-List benefits of a doula on obstetrical outcomes from current research.
-Describe emotional and physical needs of people in labor, and those of their support people.
-Demonstrate helpful labor positions, recognize onset of labor and identify progress during labor.
-Demonstrate non-pharmaceutical pain reduction methods.
-Discuss VBACs and Cesarean delivery and the role of the doula.
-Describe the doula’s role in the prenatal period.
-Describe the doula’s role in the postpartum period.
-Discuss DONA International certification process and membership benefits.

This workshop includes a guided tour of a Labor and Delivery Suite in Birmingham.
About the Trainer:
Dalia Abrams, M.A., M.P.H., BDT (DONA) CD(DONA),
Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator, CLC
Dalia has been a Childbirth Educator since 1997, a Doula since 2008, a Doula trainer since 2013 and a breastfeeding counselor since 2005. Dalia is the co-founder of BirthWell Parnters and owner of BirthWise in Birmingham, the longest running doula and childbirth educator group in Birmingham. She is a DONA International Approved Doula trainer, a DONA certified birth doula and a Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator.

After that date you may apply your payment toward any future BirthWell Partners training within one year from the date you cancel, or transfer your registration to a friend.
