Doula Training

We offer a comprehensive DONA Birth Doula Workshop two times each year.

The comprehensive training includes:

Learning about interventions

Learning about medical interventions

1. Introduction to Childbirth Education for Doulas (8.4 CEUs)

2. Birth Doula Training Workshop (22.4 CEUs)

3. Breastfeeding class for Doulas
(3.5 CEUs and 3.25 L-CERPS)

4. Perinatal Health Advocate Training

Sign up for the first three components to complete the classroom requirements for DONA Birth Doula certification, or choose your own combination. The fourth class (the Perinatal Health Advocate Training) is for doulas planning to work as volunteers for BirthWell Partners and for anyone interested in working in their communities to support low-resource families and address health disparities.

BirthWell also holds a FREE Volunteer Orientation twice a year in conjunction with our Doula training. This class and the Perinatal Health Advocate Training, are a requirement for all Doulas and Doula trainees wishing to volunteer with our organization; attending births with low-resource mothers.

BirthWell Partners also holds continuing education meetings/trainings monthly for our volunteers.

About the Birth Doula Workshop:

This course is approved for 22.4 nursing CEUs.
This course is for anyone interested in assisting women and families to have a satisfying birth experience. It is designed to help participants become expert labor support providers. It uses texts and supplementary literature, video, and practical skills. Attendance constitutes one step in the process to become a DONA International-certified Doula (CD)DONA.

On completion of the intensive 21-hour workshop, participants will be able to:
Identify the significance of birth to a family.
Define the role of the doula and her scope of practice.
List the benefits of doula support on obstetrical outcomes from current reseach.
Describe emotional and physical needs of laboring women and their partners.
Demonstrate helpful labor positions, recognize onset of labor and identify progress during labor.
Demonstrate non-pharmaceutical pain reduction methods.
Discuss VBACs and Cesarean delivery and the role of the doula.
Describe the doula’s role in the prenatal period.
Describe the doula’s role in the postpartum period.
Discuss DONA International certification and membership.

About the Trainer:

Dalia Abrams has been a Childbirth Educator since 1997, a Doula since 2008 and a breastfeeding counselor since 1996. Dalia is the co-founder of BirthWell Parnters and owner of BirthWise in Birmingham the longest running Doula and childbirth educator group in Birmingham. She is a DONA International-certified labor Doula and approved Doula trainer and a Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator.

    The Birth Well Partners Doula Workshop is well underway. It is day two and we are having an awesome time. The prospective doulas are bonding and sharing their stories. There is a real sense of comradery, and the information is awesome!!! We go from laughing to wiping tears as we share and learn together.

    Peace, love and many blessings to all of the NEW doulas, trainers (Marlo and Lisi) and Dalia and Susan. I just wanted to express my extreme gratitude, appreciation and awe at the knowledge, power, intuitive wisdom and joy that was shared during my weekend training as a 2012 volunteer doula. I learned a lot about the birth process as it relates to the majority of women’s birthing journey. I also learned a lot about my own personal views and as it relates to others’ birthing journey. As someone who had (what I like to call) an intuitive birth (allowing my body and intuition to work together to bring my baby into the world), along with the support, love and encouragement from my husband, mother (& MIL) and midwives…I was blown away by many of my other doula sisters’ birth stories of surrendering to what they hadn’t planned for (most were polar opposite of their original birth plan.) It further confirmed how powerful, amazing and INTUITIVE ALL OUR births are.

    I look forward to being apart of many other intuitive births.
