INTERESTED IN HAVING A DOULA SUPPORT YOU AT YOUR BIRTH?
Eligibility For Doula Services
Doula support is free if you’re on Medicaid. While Medicaid doesn’t currently cover doula care in Alabama, we use Medicaid eligibility as a guide to determine financial need.
Not on Medicaid? You may still qualify! We offer a sliding scale based on income. Check out our sliding scale and eligibility criteria here:
BirthWell’s doula services are fully funded by grants and donations. Our goal is simple: if you need a doula, we’re here for you.
How It Works

You and Your Doula: A Partnership
We’re excited and honored to support you during this important time in your life! Here are a few things to know as you begin working with your doula:
-
Your doula really cares about helping families. She will spend 30–40 hours (or more) supporting you!
-
Most doulas can only take 1 or 2 clients per month. That’s because they need to be on-call, and babies don’t arrive on a set schedule!
-
Many BirthWell Partners doulas also have full-time or part-time jobs. To be there for you, they may take unpaid time off or shift their work schedules.
-
Many doulas are also parents. They often have to plan childcare to meet with you. Please be respectful of their time by staying in touch or letting them know if plans change.

Why are we sharing this?

Because we want you to understand the time, care, and energy your doula—and our staff—are giving to support you. BirthWell Partners is a small nonprofit, and we rely on grants and donations to offer this free support.

Please understand that if you begin the process and don’t follow through, it prevents another birth giver from receiving our services. Let’s work together to ensure everyone gets the support they deserve!
Key Things To Consider
Timing of Contact
If possible, please try to contact us at least 2-3 months before your due date. This gives us plenty of time to set up the best match between you and your doula. However, we try to accommodate anyone we can at any point in their pregnancy.
Your Commitment
To fully benefit from doula support, it requires your commitment as well. This includes communicating and being responsive to your doula, letting them know when you have appointments, when labor begins, or if your needs change along the way. If you decide you no longer want our services, please communicate with your doula or staff
Labor Room Limits

Hospitals often limit how many support people can be in the room. Be sure to count your doula in that number. You will need help at the hospital AFTER you give birth and the doula has gone home. This is when it’s great to have your family members and friends available to bring you food, watch the baby while you shower or sleep, and visit with you.
